What the work actually looks like
Damp proofing is disruptive work, and we think you should see that before booking anyone. These photographs show the real stages, from walls hacked back to brick through to a skimmed finish ready for decoration. Select any photograph to view it full size.
The stages in the photographs
From bare brick to ready to decorate
Most damp proofing jobs follow the same four stages. Here is what you are looking at in the gallery above.
Stage 1
Hacked back to brick
Salt contaminated plaster is taken off back to sound masonry. It looks drastic, but leaving it in place would let the salts come back through the new finish.
Stage 2
Damp proof course and membrane
A new chemical damp proof course is injected into the mortar, and tanking membrane is fixed where a wall needs a physical barrier against moisture.
Stage 3
Render coat
The brown layer in many of the photographs is a salt resistant render. It protects the new finish from any salts left in the brickwork behind it.
Stage 4
Skimmed and ready to decorate
Once dry, the render is skimmed to a smooth finish and the room is left tidy and ready for decoration.
